Transforming the South Campus

The final phase of The Next 100 Years campaign is underway.

Thanks to strong campaign momentum, we are now focused on the South Campus and the final phase of The Next 100 Years campaign. Construction projects underway at the Upper School will make room for innovation in the sciences, mathematics, the arts, and library research.

Poly's science curriculum and enrollments have outgrown our facilities. The South Campus project represents our firm commitment to scientific excellence for the future.

Seven new laboratory classrooms will supply lab space for all science classes. Currently, the entire department shares four classrooms, some of which are converted spaces with limited lab capacity.

The new science-math-library building will facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing the Upper School math and science teachers together under one roof.

A larger, more flexible Upper School library equipped with technology for the 21st century will occupy the top floor of the new building.

The conversion of Boswell Library will make room for two new performance studios in Garland.  One of these will double as a small performance space, ideal for pieces that are written or directed by students.

The capstone of the campus plan is the new science-math-library building currently under construction on Cornell Road. The Mudd Science Building was razed in July 2011 to make way for this three-level facility. Features of the building include:

• Seven new laboratory classrooms that will give all science classes access to lab space, cutting-edge equipment, and prep rooms.
• Location of science and math departments under one roof to facilitate interdisciplinary innovation.
• A larger, more flexible Upper School Library on the top floor that will provide more room for online access, research instruction, and collaborative student work

The new science-math-library building will also allow us to expand our arts facilities to support an arts program that is bursting at the seams:

• Boswell Library will be transformed into a visual arts mecca including studios for drawing and painting, printmaking, and digital photography, as well as gallery space.
• Vacated art space in Garland will become two new rehearsal studios for the Performing Arts Department. One will be a dance studio; the other will also double as an intimate performance space, ideal for student independent work.

Early donors have already contributed more than $3.5 million toward the $15 million we need to raise for the South Campus construction. With nearly 25 percent of our goal committed, we now seek key leadership donors who can help put us over the finish line by December 31, 2012.
